This double-storey semi-detached house is located in the neighborhood Cahaya SPK. Our client had a clear idea of how to cater this home renovation project with her passion for cooking and entertaining guests over weekend dinner and BBQ sessions in a modern-industrial café vibe.

For this project, we transformed the existing outdoor patio that divides the Living and Dining into a new informal enclosed space for watching TV, and transformed the side greenery into an outdoor guests-entertaining area with its own seating area, dining area and kitchen for cooking and baking.

To fit our client’s budget, instead of using tinted glass and steel structure for the outdoor roofing that extends from the existing glass awning at the backyard, we proposed an exposed timber roofing structure with terracotta orange roof tiles. This way, the extended outdoor area roofing will be in much more cohesive design with the existing roofing of the house.

Apart from that, an exposed timber roofing structure offers relaxing resort-style ambiance. The vertical timber louvers allow stack effect ventilation, which permits warm air under the roof tiles to escape. The exterior walls are kept crisp white so that it does not steal the attention away from the exposed roof structure and the pattern tiles of the flooring.

The color and texture of the cement-look porcelain floor tiles blend seamlessly with the new cement-rendered kitchen island and counter. There are three clusters of pattern porcelain tiles on the floor- each cluster is strategically placed in front of each sliding door that connects the internal to the external of the house. These pattern floor tiles also play important role in segmenting the open plan into three- two lounge areas and the dining area.

The kitchen island and the food preparation counter use concrete in glossy cement-render finish for its robustness. The material is very durable against heat from hot baking trays and can withstand the tropical heat and heavy rain of Malaysian weather. Concrete countertop is resistant to scratches and flexible material that if it chips, you can just fill it back with cement and it would be as good as new.

The kitchen island houses a floating cabinetry to store tableware, cutleries and cooking utensils. It is raised from the floor to protect the tableware from outdoor animals that maybe our client is not aware of. The hidden lighting under the island countertop introduces soft warm glow and intimate atmosphere during night-time.

In addition to the hidden lighting in the joinery and the modern-industrial style pendant light fixtures that our client has in her possession, the simple wall light fixtures on existing half-wall perimeter wall highlights the outdoor architecture elements at night and further collaborates in the whole intimate ambiance.

For the new TV area, we added thick architraves at the opening, where the sliding doors were originally at, for a more refined termination. New timber strips are added at the original opening where tall windows were located. These timber strips allow natural lighting from the outdoor area to filter through into the house and into the stairs hallway. Additionally, when the sliding doors at the TV area are open, there will be cross natural ventilation into the middle of the house.

The floating TV console gives an illusion of a much bigger space. The hidden lighting underneath the joinery bounces on the glossy floor tiles and it further strengthens this illusion. Furthermore, this hidden lighting adds warm glow and drama when our client entertains her guests outdoor over dinner time.

Last but not least, with the same dark tone of the opening architraves, we framed a portion of the long stretch of wall at the main entrance door and make it into a feature wall with a mural artwork inspired by a Christian Dior ad illustration. It becomes an amazing backdrop for picture time with family and friends after a memorable dinner get-together.
