S3 Residence

Project Type: Condo Residential Unit
Site Condition: New & Empty
Renovation Size:  185 sqft
Location: Bukit Jelutong, Selangor
Year of Completion: 2020

From the get-go, our Client has firmly decided to turn this decent-sized one bedroom condo unit into a rental home. It is already equipped with a fully-functional galley kitchen with a single-bowl sink, a small induction hob and a fridge. Since the footprint of the open-plan space for Living, Dining and Kitchen is quite limited, the Client wishes to have a kitchen island that can allocate a conventional oven, provide extra counter space for meal preparation when needed and can also become a place for dining.

To optimize the kitchen space, we proposed an island with its length perpendicular to the existing galley kitchen. The island has two height levels: the standard counter height for meal preparation activity and a dining table height for much comfortable dining experience. We use similar tone and textures for the materials, to match as close to the existing cabinetry as possible.

We purposely leave some void under the table-height counter to create a sense of openness and lightness to the otherwise constricted alley between the existing kitchen cabinetry and the newly added kitchen island. More natural light and ventilation coming from the balcony can flood through the island into the kitchen space.

We introduce fluted glass screens with matt black aluminum frame at the kitchen island to hide the view of the Laundry nook from the Living area. The screen also becomes the vertical structure members to hold three-tier shelving for easy-reach storage.

Apart from the Kitchen, we installed a wall unit cabinetry with matt black hanging rod attached to underneath it at the Laundry nook. The black tone from this hanging rod is in synchronize harmony with the black tone of the aluminum frames on the kitchen island. The blush pink tones of the wave-surfaced tiles for the Laundry splash-back add a little element of surprise at the all-white nook. It makes laundry time more fun and bearable, if you will. The tiles are arranged vertically to give an illusion of height at the lowered ceiling narrow area.
