Inserted into the hilly suburb of Bukit Indah, Ampang, this 21-year-old double-storey terrace link house has been freshly uplifted with modern façade that effortlessly emerges from its surrounding neighbourhood members. This residential project has not only seen a transformation in its façade appearance, it has gone through spatial extensions in the front and the back as well as reconfigurations of spatial planning on the first floor.

For this particular major renovation project, we worked closely with young and talented design architect studio- A11 Design Studio, based in Ampang. Though it is our first work collaboration with the studio, the conversation between architectural and interior design processes was fluent and smooth.

One of the interesting features of this house is the newly extended master ensuite that connects to a new private balcony on the first floor. The shower area has two sliding glass doors that are located opposite to each other. They serve both as shower screens, and as a pathway that joins the main bathroom area to the bathtub at the balcony. This layout configuration allows our clients to access the private balcony from the master bedroom itself and from the master ensuite as well.

From the get-go, our clients have verbally expressed their wish to have a non-conventional master ensuite, a ‘sexy bathroom’ is the best way to put it in words. Architect studio A11 Design Studio has beautifully interpreted it in design by adopting sky glass roofing with aluminum louvers undeath. The louvers substantially reduce the heat and glare from the sun during the day. At night, this area transitions into a much more intimate atmosphere with soft wash of indirect light on the wall tiles, giving our clients a memorable bath experience under starry night sky.

The aluminium louvers under the glass roof are replicated in the vertical axis of the balcony, not only to maintain the cohesiveness of the overall design, but to provide much privacy to our clients. To top off, the louvers are also a great solution to allow air circulation and natural lighting during the day.

Another delightful character of this house is the newly extended indoor patio adjacent to the car porch.  When the glass folding doors are extensively open, it moderately blurs the perception of indoor and outdoor boundaries, providing our clients a balanced dosage of natural light, natural ventilation and rejuvenating view of greenery from the small patch of garden.

This area is a manifestation of our clients’ love for coffee and café joints- an area designated in the home to enjoy slower pace of life sipping home-crafted cups of coffee and reminiscing daily memories with family members over breakfast and teatime. The sound of trickling water from the free-standing water feature vessel muffles the distracting vehicle sound from the street.

We assisted architect and our clients in configuring new layout for all the bedrooms on the first floor and the newly extended coffee bar area, as well as designing joinery for new storage at the kitchen, the laundry and linen cabinetry at the staircase hallway on the first floor. Apart from that, we assisted the architect and our clients with finishes selection for most areas of the house, namely, the newly extended bathrooms and all bedrooms on the first floor, the new balcony at the master bedroom and the newly extended coffee bar area on the ground floor.
