Located in a premier township of Bukit Jelutong, this open-plan townhouse has gone through transformation with proper layout plan segregation. As much as we would like to think that open-plan layout suits various types of home owners- from single dwelling, to newlyweds to family with children, it is not for everyone.

The brief from our Clients was simple and straight-forward. They prefer their kitchen to be relocated in a room rather than at an open space. Therefore, we relocated their new kitchen at the Utility room.

The original footprint of the Utility room was too small to fit a fully-functional kitchen. Therefore, we removed the existing wall of the room, and extended it into the now Dining Area with new dry walls that house glass pocket door and fixed window panels. This way, even if the Kitchen is now properly separated from the open-plan Living and Dining area, it still gives an illusion of openness through the clear glazing.

The newly installed glass pocket door and the fixed window panels also allow natural light from four sets of double-leaf swing doors to permeate into the originally window-less Utility room. As an added bonus, our Clients are able to partake in heavy cooking activities without having to worry about the over-powering smell from Malaysian all-time favorite cuisine of sambal and gulai wafting into the Living and Dining area because our Clients can just close the glass sliding pocket door shut.

The kitchen cabinetry is made of solid nyatoh wood doors in matt spray paint finish. It is adorned with glinting gold pull handles in hairline finish for that added touch of luxury. They match perfectly with the gold kitchen tap sitting tall above the white double-bowl ceramic farmhouse sink.

We use white flat-edged metro tiles for the splash-back, and the glossy surface gleams under the line of warm hidden lighting in the joinery. This hidden lighting is particularly important in providing sufficient light to aid our Client during meal preparation. The dark navy blue and floral artisan tiles for splash-back at the cooking area introduce an element of surprise to the otherwise all-neutral color scheme at the Kitchen.

Another main brief from our Client was they would like to divide the Living area into two- an area where the adults can immerse in conversation over coffee and tea when the guests come over, and another area dedicated to the children, where they too, can have their own TV or game time. With that in mind, we sealed up the opening with glass pocket door with dry wall and prepared it with new power points for our Clients to pop their loose TV credenza against. We salvaged this pocket door and re-use it at the new Kitchen.
