D8 Residence
Project Type: Bedroom Makeover & New Laundry of a Landed Residential Unit
Site Condition: Occupied
Renovation Size: 253 sqft
Location: Denai Alam
Year of Completion: 2021
Nestled in the neighborhood of an affluent township, Denai Alam, this three-storey terrace house has seen both simple and major transformation at our client’s child’s bedroom as well as the laundry area on the top floor. The brief for the child’s bedroom was simple and straightforward: We need to provide a proper study desk for their growing teen son while maintaining other elements in the bedroom. Instead of just that, we proposed storage and calming blue textured wallpaper on the wall for added value of the space.
The location of the desk adjacent to the only windows in the space allows better lighting for doing tasks during the day. It is possibly the best location for a desk in the small footprint bedroom. Being near to the windows allows the son to have natural ventilation and access to view of the blue sky.
There are three types of storage integrated with this study desk: Drawers to keep all stationeries neatly and deep drawer to keep backpack hidden from visual line, closed top compartments on the wall as well as open wall shelf for easy access to daily use books, documents and files.
Hidden LED slim strip light under the open shelf comes in handy for reading and studying at night time. It gives a warm soft glow and delicately enhanced the herringbone textures of the pastel blue wallpaper cladded wall. Apart from that, track electrical outlet type gives the flexibility of adding new plug points for charging electronic devices as needed.
The new laundry room takes place on the open terrace of the top floor. Originally, it was an area dedicated for gardening vegetables in pots, however under-utilized. Since the rooftop area is quite spacious, our client decided to remodel the open terrace into a new enclosed laundry room that can also cater for BBQ preparation in case of joyous BBQ family get-together on the roof.
The laundry resides on a neutral color palette with a pop of bold blue color. This space is given a new breath of atmosphere with SPC flooring and light grey wavy-surfaced ceramic backsplash tiles on the wall.
We proposed an L-shaped cabinetry that can cater for laundry activities- from washing to drying to ironing and to folding clothes, and it can cater for BBQ preparations as well. The dark grey solid surface counter with void underneath gives allowance for a washer and a dryer to be slotted in side-by-side, and for laundry baskets too. On a side note, the long counter space is great for folding clothes activity.
There are plenty of closed compartments to store cleaning products and other utility items. The tall cabinet has a slide-out ironing board integrated, which makes ironing process much easier to deal with.
The new folding glass doors are installed to allow access to the open rooftop area, and at the same time allow natural lighting into the space. We proposed a set of folding shuttered windows by the sink. The black tone of the shutters corresponds seamlessly with the black tone of the countertop, the sink and tap, the metal bar support of the wall shelf, the retractable ceiling drying line and the black pull handles of the cabinet. These shutters give our client the flexibility to control how much natural light, ventilation and privacy to let into the space. Even when these shutters are closed, the glass panel on top still allow sufficient natural light in.
Since the ceiling height of the space is quite high, we installed a set of timber strip beams across the space in order to house the track light, giving an added value for the overall look.
