Renovation Size: 2,206 sqft
Location: Elmina

Located in a growing township of Elmina, this double-story terrace house has undergone a simple interior and outdoor transformation that fits for a family of four. One of our clients’ briefs is to give a weight of importance in creating a home that reflects key principles of Montessori concept – a safe space for their young children to develop and enhance necessary daily life skills as well as to enhance parent-children interactions within a space.

Integrating within that concept of a home, our clients wish to have a simple and minimalist home in neutral color palette. However so, they are also open to few splashes of pastel colors to liven up their space.

As you walk through the entrance door, you would be greeted by a full-height cabinet at the foyer to keep footwear, school and work bags. A hanging rod is installed in one of the cabinet compartments where our client can hang her instant hijabs and cardigans in case there is a need to quickly change when the parcel delivery man rings the doorbell. There is a floating console table with hidden lighting underneath it and in the ceiling pocket to set the intimate ambiance upon entering the house. Plenty of drawers are added in the cabinetry making them perfect storage to keep keys, important mails and small unopened parcels.

The living area is kept minimal with only a TV console from our design-ready Basic Living Home package in sight. Even though the design of the console is kept minimal and simple, it comes with plenty of storage and tall unit compartments- open and enclosed.

The area underneath the staircase is often overlooked and at most, it is transformed into an enclosed store. However, for this project, we transformed this particular area into children's play area with its own cabinetry to store toys and books. With soft blue layer of paint on the walls and under the staircase slab, it offers a fortress-like seclusion atmosphere for children, yet it is so open that the parents can monitor their children from all angles- namely, from the living area, the dining and from the kitchen.

The open-plan kitchen introduces a splash of soft pale green atop the white and neutral color palette. It features a hidden pantry cabinet with folding doors. It is a perfect nook to store away water dispenser and other kitchen appliances for a much clutter-free visual line. The hidden lighting in the joinery of this pantry cabinet offers soft glow when our clients need to fetch a glass of water from the dispenser at night.

The kitchen island is an important space for our clients- it is a place where all family members get together; a place where our clients allow their children to practice and develop their meal preparing skills and get messy while at it. Therefore, having open shelves at the island can be very convenient and easily accessible for their young children to store and retrieve tableware and utensils. Having a power point at the island is essential for using kitchen appliances like blender, mixer and other food processors.

The backyard and terrace at the bedroom on ground floor were initially open with only half wall and steel fencing marking the boundary. We introduced vent blocks, also known as breeze blocks, at these two open areas. We specifically chose vent blocks with little holes and arranged them in a way that they can provide sheer privacy at these two areas. The vent blocks and louvered door allow natural ventilation to flow into and out of the kitchen when the kitchen door is left ajar whilst providing privacy to home owners to protect their awrah. The tinted glass roof above lets in natural sunlight so that wet laundry can be let out to air-dry and dry under the sun.

The master bedroom on the first floor borrows the same color palette with the ones in common area on ground floor for a much more cohesive design. Its full-height wardrobe provides enough storage for our clients. We propose drawers at the bottom part of the wardrobe, which are nice touch to keep small items easily-accessible. There is an open display shelving compartment at the corner, which is great for keeping personal care items and night-reading books. The built-in headboard is kept low so that our clients can personalize their bedroom space with statement artwork on the simple feature wall of soothing warm grey. This feature wall emanates soft glow from the hidden lighting in ceiling pocket, which further emphasizes the artwork on display.
